TotalEnergies reported that one of the processing trains at the SATORP refinery, located in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, sustained damage following incidents recorded overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday. As a preventive measure, the company decided to halt several operational units while assessing the extent of the damage.

The facility, considered one of the largest refining platforms globally, has a processing capacity of approximately 465,000 barrels of crude per day. Its relevance within the Saudi energy system makes it a critical point for regional and international supply.

Impact on Production and Crude Supply

As a result of the attacks on energy infrastructure in the country, Saudi Arabia’s oil production has been reduced by approximately 600,000 barrels per day. Likewise, the flow through the East-West pipeline has decreased by around 700,000 barrels per day, affecting the main available export route.

This context increases concern about the stability of global oil supply, especially in a scenario marked by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Geopolitical Context and Regional Tensions

According to official reports, the incidents occur amidst a climate of growing instability, with attacks attributed to Iran just hours after a ceasefire agreement related to conflicts involving the United States and Israel.

Saudi energy infrastructure has historically been a strategic target in such conflicts, raising risks for international energy security.

TotalEnergies and Saudi Aramco Participation

The SATORP refinery is a joint venture in which Saudi Aramco holds 62.5%, while TotalEnergies controls 37.5%. Both companies maintain key operations in the region, reinforcing the complex’s importance within the oil value chain.

TotalEnergies stated that it continues to assess the operational consequences of the incident. So far, no casualties have been reported, although inspections are ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage.

Ongoing Assessment and Potential Implications

For now, the company’s priority is to ensure the safety of the facilities and personnel, as well as to gradually restore operations. However, the disruption of this infrastructure could have effects on energy markets if production limitations are prolonged.

The development of the situation will be key to understanding the real impact on crude oil prices and the stability of global supply.
