Former Nova Scotia gold mine could be used as renewable energy center

Atlantic Mining Nova Scotia and Natural Forces have initiated a feasibility study to measure the possibility of reusing the mine.

A Canadian unit of Australian gold producer St Barbara Ltd has partnered with independent power producer Natural Forces to explore the possibility of building a renewable energy center at the now closed gold mine in Nova Scotia.

Atlantic Mining Nova Scotia and Natural Forces have initiated a feasibility study at the site to evaluate the possibility of repurposing the mine as a as a closed-loop pumped hydro energy storage combined with a solar photovoltaic (PV) plant. This study will begin this month, and the conceptual design is expected to be ready by the end of 2024.

Atlantic Mining’s CEO and managing director, Andrew Strelein, said, “At Atlantic Mining, we are committed to sustainable development. Since the closure of Touquoy, we have been analyzing possible alternative land uses as we move into the reclamation phase of the mine.“.

It is relevant to note that open pit mining at Touquoy commenced in 2017, concluding extraction in early 2023. Since then, the company has been processing medium and low grade stockpiled ore. Finally, the collaboration between Atlantic Mining Nova Scotia and Natural Forces promises an innovative future for the former mine, aligning mining efforts with sustainable energy solutions.
