Canada seeks to boost energy trade with India, energy minister says

Canada has set its sights on India as a new strategic destination for its energy supply, with the intention of reducing its high dependence on the US market. This was stated by the Minister of Energy, Tim Hodgson, during the Indian Energy Week 2026, where he highlighted the urgency of diversifying commercial partners.

On India’s side, the need to diversify the source of its energy is clear. In 2025, its LNG imports fell by 6.3%, while demand for crude oil increased by 2.5% per year on average. Today, India relies heavily on Russia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, but the possibility of incorporating Canada as a supplier is strategic.
