Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar, began commercial operation of the Papago Storage project, a 1200 MWh battery plant located in Maricopa County, Arizona. This unit is the first of three facilities contracted with Arizona Public Service (APS) and is already feeding stored energy into the state’s grid to coincide with the summer surge in consumption.

About the Papago battery storage plant

The Papago project represents the beginning of a series that will culminate in 1800 MWh of storage capacity and 150 MWac of solar generation. Together, the three developments will power up to 72,000 homes for four hours using batteries and will provide solar power for another 24,000 homes annually.

APS highlighted the incorporation of Papago as part of its balanced energy mix strategy, ensuring a stable and affordable electricity supply. State officials also recognized the impact of the project. Kevin Thompson of the Corporation Commission noted its relevance in addressing consumption growth in Arizona, while legislative leader Michael Carbone framed it as essential to accompany the state’s economic dynamism.

The project also engages with the community through the Community CaRE program, with donations to local entities such as the Harquahala Fire District and Arlington Elementary School.

Execution and long-term maintenance

The plant was implemented by e-STORAGE, a Canadian Solar subsidiary specializing in turnkey energy storage solutions. This same entity will continue to provide maintenance services to Papago Storage under a long-term agreement.

Ismael Guerrero, CEO of Recurrent Energy, highlighted that Papago’s entry into operations reinforces its commitment to the state’s energy infrastructure and to generating sustainable value for local communities and partners.
