Modern aircraft, such as the B787, can have the fuselage made of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP), which means that inspection and damage analysis programs must include non-destructive detection (NDT) techniques capable of identifying damage. such as delaminations, detachments and the presence of humidity. For A310 aircraft, the rudder is made of a panel of carbon fiber layers oriented in the 0, 45 and 90 directions, reinforced with a polyamide (NOMEX) core in honeycomb configuration.
One of the most used techniques in the failure analysis of these materials in the Aerospace industry is Thermography, which is used to evaluate the integrity of composite materials. This technique is based on the measurement of the temperature distribution on the surface of the material. Variable that can be influenced by the presence of defects in the material, such as cracks, delaminations and air bubbles. These defects can cause changes in the way the material’s surface temperature is distributed, and these changes can be detected.

- NETD / Thermal Resolution (<20 mK – 25 mK): Detecting subtle thermal gradients is critical for identifying deep-layer delaminations or moisture ingress in sandwich panels (NOMEX cores). High thermal sensitivity allows for the visualization of defects before they become structurally critical.
- High Frame Rate (100 Hz to 1000 Hz+): Essential for Active Pulse Thermography and monitoring aeroengine thermal behavior. High-speed acquisition is required to capture the rapid thermal diffusion in metallic components and to analyze dynamic fatigue during vibration testing.
- Spectral Band Selection (MWIR vs. LWIR):
- MWIR (3-5 µm): Preferred for high-temperature engine components and through-flame inspections.
- LWIR (8-14 µm): Ideal for composite structures (CFRP/GFRP) and detecting corrosion under paint due to lower atmospheric interference at long distances.
- Spatial Resolution & IFOV (Instantaneous Field of View): For fuselage and wing inspections, the system must resolve millimetric defects (cracks or air bubbles) from a safe standoff distance. A low IFOV ensures that each pixel represents a small enough physical area to prevent “blurring” of critical defect edges.
- Advanced Calibration & Emissivity Workflow: Aerospace materials like polished aluminum or specialized coatings have varying emissivity. The setup must include real-time emissivity correction and multi-point calibration to ensure absolute temperature accuracy in QA reporting.
- Synchronization for Active Thermography: The camera must be able to synchronize with external heat sources (flash lamps or lasers). This “lock-in” capability is what differentiates a diagnostic tool from a simple monitoring camera, enabling the detection of lack of adhesion in bonded joints.
- Automated Reporting & Traceability: Quality Assurance (QA) protocols require digital traceability. The software must generate standardized NDT reports that document environmental conditions, equipment parameters, and raw radiometric data for long-term structural health monitoring (SHM).
Challenges of thermography in the aerospace industry
Despite the benefits of thermography in the aerospace industry, there are also challenges, including:
- Interpretation of thermography results can be difficult. It is necessary to have personnel trained in the interpretation of thermographic images to obtain accurate results.
- It can only detect defects on the surface of the material. It cannot detect defects inside the material.
- Environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, can affect thermography results. It is necessary to take measures to control the environmental conditions during the evaluation.
