Shell, bp and Lightsource bp have been given the go-ahead by the Trinidadian government to begin construction on what is being touted as the largest solar project in the Caribbean.
[post_relacionado]Construction of the grid-scale renewable energy project is scheduled to break ground in the first quarter of 2023. It is expected to be operational in the third and fourth quarters of 2024. Shell and bp will initially have joint (50/50) interests.
Francis Mann, UK and T&T business development manager for Lightsource bp, said construction will start on the project in March 2023, with an estimated duration of 10 months.
The project will be built on two sites; one in Brechin Castle, near the Point Lisas industrial estate, and the other in Orange Grove, near Trincity. Both sites will have the combined capacity to generate a total of 112.2 megawatts (MW) of solar electricity, more than the total generating capacity of most Eastern Caribbean islands.
Now, with the deals signed, T&T Minister for Energy and Power Industries Stuart Young has signaled that future projects will come online faster. He urged the parties involved to speed up the pace of delivery, citing long delays they have faced in the past.
Minister Young also highlighted that the project will “unlock great potential for T&T” to decarbonise and start generating green electrons, which could be linked to the creation of green hydrogen, green ammonia and even green methanol.
