A team of scientists from Australia, China and the UK has found a new way to extract water from virtually dry air to produce green hydrogen.
[post_relacionado]This clean energy is produced by electrolyzing moisture in the air, rather than traditional liquid water, which can enable the supply of hydrogen fuel to dry and remote regions. The environmental impact could be especially minimal if renewable energy is used in the electrolytic process, according to Newsweek.
The device uses porous materials soaked in hygroscopic electrolytes (with a high potential to extract moisture spontaneously, without using external energy) to absorb water from the atmosphere. It then splits this pure water into hydrogen and oxygen, using electrolysis. “We have developed a so-called direct air electrolyser” (DAE), Kevin Li, a professor at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and a co-author of the study, told Newsweek Gang.
It can be used in extremely arid environments, even with a relative humidity of just 4%, which makes it possible to dispense with liquid water for the production of renewable energy.
The authors expect the device to be ready for market launch by the end of 2025, “with a size of 1,000 square meters and the ability to operate in deserts, cold regions and stormy places,” Li said.
