The Port of Antwerp-Brujas has officially inaugurated Volta 1, the first electric tugboat operational in Europe. This addition represents a decisive step in its sustainability plan, which envisages a climate-neutral port operation by 2050.
Electric tug reduces emissions at the port
Equipped with reverse propulsion technology and double bow, the Volta 1 offers exceptional maneuverability. It is powered by lithium-titanium oxide batteries that store 2,782 MWh and are fully recharged in just two hours by 1.5 MW charging stations. With an autonomy of 12 hours and a towing capacity of 70 tons, it matches the performance of a traditional diesel tug without emitting CO₂.
[post_relacionado]Along with the Volta 1, five additional RSD tugboats with improved energy efficiency are incorporated, replacing older vessels. This modernization has a direct impact on emissions reduction, since tugboats account for about 85% of the CO₂ generated by port operations.
Towards a multi-fuel port
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges reinforces its role in the maritime energy transition with the parallel implementation of hydrogen and methanol technologies. This allows it to evaluate under real conditions which option offers the best performance, autonomy and economic viability. The objective is to consolidate its position as a port capable of operating with multiple fuels with a low environmental footprint.
The tug was manufactured by Damen Shipyards in Vietnam and traveled more than 10,000 kilometers to Belgium. Its deployment involved the adaptation of cargo infrastructure and specialized crew training. This partnership with Damen reaffirms our mutual commitment to advanced maritime solutions.
The port authorities consider this launch a key milestone in the green transformation of shipping.
