The Basque initiative for the production of solid-state batteries will have its headquarters in Araba, in the Miñano Technology Park, a few meters from the CIC Energigune, which will offer its technological support. The new company estimates to start production in 2027.
[post_relacionado]Every day there are more European countries that are aligned with the objective of generating a less aggressive impact on our environment and reducing the CO 2 footprint. In this sense, the future solid-state battery factory that will be located in the Basque Country with an investment of 700 million will generate the project called Basquevolt, which plans to start the production of battery cells in four years to reach the construction of a volume of equipment in 2027 equivalent to the generation of 10 GWh.
The Basquevolt plant will produce, from Álava, solid-state batteries for three main sectors: automotive, heavy transport and stationary sector through electrochemical cells. It estimates that its production will begin in 2027, although in 2025 there will be a pilot line. Thus, it will go from being the destination of a battery factory to one of the innovative countries in this technology, solid-state lithium batteries.
The promoters of BASQUEVOLT are aware that liquid electrolyte lithium batteries are reaching their state of maturity and that the next technological breakthrough to truly unlock the true potential of energy storage must come from the solid state. The initial goals of the company are the development of prototype cells and a pilot production line underway in 2025, with the ambition to start production in 2027. The new technology will greatly exceed the energy density of current storage solutions. Thanks to its technological base, BASQUEVOLT aspires to become the European leader in solid-state batteries.
In the autonomous community of Euskadi, the production of battery cells is planned to reach a volume of equipment equivalent to the generation of 10 GWh and to achieve a new goal in energy transformation by 2027.
Thanks to the support of the Basque Government, the Álava Technology Park presented the Basquevolt solid-state battery factory project, a project in which Iberdrola, CIE Automotive, Enagás, EIT InnoEnergy and CIC energiGUNE participate.
Basquevolt’s goal is to store energy, which will be key in future electric mobility, to increase the driving range of vehicles and minimize battery recharging time. In a first phase, Basquevolt will have its headquarters in the aforementioned technology park, in the Marie Curie Building, a few meters from the CIC energiGUNE laboratories, where its engineers carry out research on the batteries of the future.
In addition, with this company, for which 700 million will be invested, 800 direct jobs will be generated. And its scientists are under the leadership of Michel Armand, a renowned researcher known as “the father of the solid polymer electrolyte”.
