PowerCell has received the first commercial order for its new marine fuel cell platform, the MS-500, marking an achievement in its move towards sustainable energy solutions in the marine sector. The order, valued at SEK 44 million, comes from a well-known Italian manufacturer specializing in marine systems integration.
New generation of hydrogen fuel cell for marine use
The MS-500 system is designed to deliver up to 1 megawatt of power through two modular units, and is based on PowerCell’s high-performance HDS platform. This technology is intended for both shipboard electrical systems and potential ship propulsion applications.
[post_relacionado]Its compact architecture allows flexible integration into containers, improving space and energy efficiency. In addition, the design meets future classification requirements, with the goal of achieving type approval for full commercialization in 2028.
Decarbonization strategy and international regulations
This development is part of a growing trend in the shipping industry towards zero-emission energy sources. The collaboration with the Italian OEM reflects how the sector is adapting to the decarbonization targets promoted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which include the reduction of greenhouse gases and pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and sulfur.
PowerCell is estimated to earn revenues of SEK 11 million during 2025 as part of the contract, consolidating its presence in a marine market that has left the experimental phase behind. This order reaffirms the industry’s transition to hydrogen based energy solutions and reinforces PowerCell’s position as a key technology provider for large-scale applications.
