Mexico decided to nationalize its lithium resources, a measure that has been applied since April of this year. After that, it has been announced that at the end of 2023 it could start the production of lithium batteries.
[post_relacionado]According to Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, the country has secured foreign investment and the support of the United States, its main trading partner.
“We already have investments from companies from South Korea, China and a program agreed with the US to start producing batteries in Mexico prepared for 2023, we hope in the third or fourth quarter,” said the foreign minister.
Currently, Mexico does not have commercial lithium production, but it has contracts with a dozen foreign companies to explore potential deposits.
A recent report from the Mexican Ministry of Finance pegs the value of Sonora’s lithium reserves at USD 600 billion.
According to Mining.com, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced a plan for USD 2.5 billion in October. The goal is to turn parts of the US border region into a clean energy hub, home to solar and wind plants, as well as electric vehicle factories.
Mexico also plans to build five large solar plants, revamp car factories to make electric vehicles, and produce batteries and semiconductors in Sonora.
