The Mexican national newspaper published a decree approved by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on the creation of a state company to exploit lithium, a metal nationalized since last April.
[post_relacionado]The company will be called Litio para México, according to the decree, and will start operating within the next six months. The new owner of Lithium for Mexico will be proposed by the Secretary of Energy and appointed by the President, according to the decree.
The ministers of Energy, Finance, Economy, Interior and Environment will form part of the company’s board of directors.
Mexico does not yet have commercial lithium production, although some foreign companies have contracts to explore potential lithium deposits. López Obrador had said in April that all contracts would be reviewed.
The decree also explains that Lithium for Mexico can work with public or private institutions to extract what is known as “white gold”.
