Karpowership‘s energy transition unit, Kinetics, and Mitsui OSK Lines(MOL) have signed a memorandum of understanding(MOU) to develop the world’s first fully integrated floating data center.
Modular floating data center technology
The initiative contemplates the design and construction of a facility with an initial capacity of between 20 and 73 MW, integrated with direct seawater cooling and energy supply through LNG-powered generator ships, developed by Karadeniz. Connection to electrical grids, solar or wind energy is also being evaluated depending on the base port.
[post_relacionado]At present, planning permissions can take years and energy supply tends to be limited. For this reason, modular modular data centers as an immediate solution. The mobility of these platforms allows them to be relocated according to demand, reducing construction times to approximately one year, compared to the more than three years required for terrestrial installations.
The company MOL will leverage its fleet and maritime logistics expertise to convert existing hulls into digital infrastructure, reusing onboard systems such as air conditioning, power generation and water harvesting. This reduces the initial investment and minimizes the environmental footprint, aligning with the shipping group’s decarbonization goals.
