InventWood, the Maryland-based materials technology company, has completed the first closing of a $15 million Series A round. This capital injection brings its total funding to more than $50 million, securing the final push to commercially launch its innovative product, Superwood.
What makes Superwood different?
Superwood is a wood that has undergone transformations at the molecular level that give it a tensile strength 50% higher than steel and a strength-to-weight ratio up to ten times greater. Unlike other structural composites, it maintains the texture, warmth and natural aesthetics of wood, but resists fire, humidity, pests and extreme weather conditions.
[post_relacionado]The development of Superwood began in 2018 under the direction of Dr. Liangbing Hu, who applied concepts from nanotechnology to redesign the cellular structure of wood. After removing non-structural components and compressing the material under precise conditions, he succeeded in creating a biogenic composite with extremely high performance.
The production plant in Frederick, Maryland, will use wood from responsibly managed forests in the United States. This approach reduces dependence on imports such as steel and aluminum, while strengthening the country’s industrial sovereignty.
First shipments and partnership with Intectural
The first batches of Superwood will be shipped in the third quarter of 2025 and will be destined for structurally demanding commercial and residential applications. The recent strategic alliance with Intectural, a distributor of architectural architectural materialsis aimed at rapid penetration of the North American market.
Key backers of the project include the U.S. Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, and private entities such as Grantham, Builders Vision, and the JLL Foundation. This ecosystem of support underscores Superwood’s transformative potential in the building sector.
