The start of commercial operations of the Gimi floating natural gas liquefaction (FLNG) unit marks a new chapter for the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) megaproject, located off the coasts of Mauritania and Senegal. Golar LNG confirmed that the unit officially commenced its 20-year lease and operating contract, cementing its participation in one of West Africa’s most ambitious offshore developments.

This contract, which triggers revenues estimated at around $3 billion in adjusted EBITDA, positions Gimi as a key player in making Mauritania and Senegal new players in liquefied natural gas exports. The operation will be led by bp, the main operator of the GTA project together with strategic partners such as Kosmos Energy, PETROSEN and SMH.

Following the recent announcement of two contracts for FLNG units in Argentina, the company has intensified work on its next generation of floating platforms. Among the options being analyzed are the MKII design with a capacity of 3.5 million metric tons per year and a final engineering study for an MKIII unit of up to 5 million tons. Also under review is the plan for an MKI model targeting a capacity of 2.7 million.
The start-up of FLNG Gimi opens up new opportunities for deepwater gas production and export, integrating floating liquefaction technology with coastal infrastructure and international agreements.
Likewise, collaboration between bp and the authorities in both countries is essential to ensure project sustainability and compliance with operational deadlines. The long-term leasing model allows Golar to maintain a solid position while diversifying its portfolio of floating solutions.
