Norwegian oil company Equinor has submitted to the Norwegian Minister of Petroleum and Energy a Plan of Development and Operation (PDO) for the Irpa gas discovery, formerly known as Asterix. The development will ensure stable activity and gas deliveries from Aasta Hansteen until 2039.

The discovery of Irpa, formerly known as Asterix, was verified in 2009 and is located in deep waters of the Norwegian Sea, 210 miles west of Bodø. Expected recoverable gas resources are estimated at approximately 705 billion standard cubic feet, equivalent to 124 million boe (Barrel of Oil Equivalent), or the consumption of nearly 2.4 million British households over a seven-year period.
The gas will be gradually incorporated into the existing infrastructure above Aasta Hansteen and will be transported to the Nyhamna gas processing plant via Polarled. From there, the gas will be transported through the Langeled pipeline system to customers in the UK and continental Europe.
The development will cost a total of USD 1.45 billion, and the field is scheduled to come online in the fourth quarter of 2026. There will be joint production by Irpa and Aasta Hansteen until 2031 and then Irpa will continue producing until 2039. The discovery will be developed with three wells and an 80 kilometer pipeline to the Aasta Hansteen platform.
