The Spanish engineering company Elecnor has been selected by Statkraft to execute two installations in Ireland and the United Kingdom, strengthening the integration of renewable energies in both electricity systems. This contract is part of the Low Carbon Inertia Services(LCIS) program, led by transmission system operators EirGrid and SONI, focused on reducing carbon-intensive generation.

The projects are being developed in Glencloosagh(Republic of Ireland) and Coleraine(Northern Ireland), where Elecnor, in consortium with its subsidiaries IQA (UK) and ESYP (Ireland), will be responsible for the design, supervision and execution of the synchronous condenser systems. These devices are essential to provide inertia, reactive power and short-circuit capacity to a grid increasingly dominated by clean energy.
[post_relacionado]The capacitors will be supplied by ANDRITZ, an Austrian technology company. The collaboration between companies from Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Austria strengthens the international dimension of the effort for a robust, low-emission electricity infrastructure.
The collaborations include the electromechanical assembly of the systems, flywheels, and the construction of 220/15 kV evacuation substations at Glencloosagh and 110/15 kV at Coleraine. This infrastructure will enable progress towards the 2030 climate targets by facilitating greater penetration of renewable sources into the grid.
