On July 3, Freire Shipyard laid the keel of a 75-meter sailing vessel for Greenpeace International at its facilities in Vigo. This step marks the beginning of the construction of a vessel designed to sail with minimal environmental impact.
A new environmentally friendly sailboat for Greenpeace
Specifically, this sailboat will have a sail area of almost 2,000m2 and will be equipped with an advanced hybrid propulsion system. This system will include hydrogen fuel cells and engines capable of using methanol as an alternative fuel alternative fuel, which will drastically reduce fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

Towards sustainable shipping
According to Fabien Rondal, deputy director of Greenpeace International’s International Program, this project represents a key step forward towards sustainable sustainable shippingdemonstrating that it is possible to increase maritime capacity and reduce the carbon footprint at the same time.
From Freire Shipyard, its general managers, Marcos Freire and Guillermo Freire, highlighted the honor of participating in this initiative, which positions the Vigo shipyard as a reference in sustainable shipbuilding and advanced naval engineering.
With this new addition, Greenpeace International’s fleet, currently comprised of the Rainbow Warrior, the Arctic Sunrise and the Witness, will have a new flagship that reinforces its environmental and technological commitment.
