On the third day of the ASNT event, ScanTech Instruments stood out by showcasing significant advancements in its modular NDT systems. Alan Dorsey, the company’s president, explained in a brief demonstration how its new control system and motorized wheel assembly are changing the development of industrial inspection tools.
The new control system allows engineers to quickly build and adapt scanners for different environments. Thanks to its modular design and four-wire architecture, teams can reuse components, speeding both prototyping and field deployment.
The Wheel Pack: Compact power meets engineering precision
One of the elements that generated the most interest was ScanTech’s wheel pack. This is a self-contained, battery-operated unit that provides traction and mobility to various types of scanners. The design allows for the construction of portable solutions for inspection tasks in pipes, tanks, or hard-to-reach spaces. Examples of scanners with dual wheel packs operating autonomously were shown at the show, capable of performing high-precision axial movements to capture high-resolution images.
Internal pipe inspection: A functional demonstration
Another key moment was the demonstration of the internal pipe inspection system, designed for automatic scanning of pipes up to several meters in length. This equipment uses the wheel pack along with additional mechanisms that allow it to move inside the pipe while applying pressure to the surface and initiating the scan.
With a single button, the system activates a spiral scan with axial and rotational axes, facilitating high-precision data collection in a very short time and with minimal human intervention.
From booth to market
Beyond demonstrations, Alan Dorsey highlighted the value of direct contact with customers and engineers at events like ASNT. Through this exchange, the ScanTech team has discovered new uses for its tools, fueling its ongoing development. Real-time feedback allows them to adapt their modular NDT systems to real-world scenarios, ensuring that products evolve based on specific industry needs.
