On September 23, in the city of Emden, Germany, the vessel Future Way, the new flagship of Wallenius Marine, was christened. This vehicle carrier has been designed under the“Sleipner” concept, which makes it a pioneer in energy efficiency and the reduction of polluting emissions in maritime transport.
The innovative technology of the Future Way vessel
The Future Way is the first of two vessels to be chartered by Volkswagen Group Logistics to operate between Europe and North America, with the aim of optimizing logistics and reducing the environmental impact generated by marine operations.
[post_relacionado]One of the features of the Future Way is its ability to cross the Atlantic without ballast water, which reduces the risk of introducing invasive species into different ecosystems. In addition, its hydrodynamic and aerodynamic design reduces fuel consumption, resulting in a more efficient and less polluting operation.
Moreover, it is equipped with engines MAN Energy Solutionsengines, the vessel emits less CO₂, less soot particles, nitrogen oxides and sulfur, improving air quality, coastal areas and planned future ports.
Volkswagen Group logistics
Volkswagen has opted for the Future Way to optimize its operations in the North Atlantic. This vessel, along with its sister ship Way Forward, are part of the company’s strategy to achieve environmentally friendly logistics, while preparing for the arrival of alternative fuels in the next decade.
With a capacity to transport up to 6,500 vehicles, the Future Way is equipped with a central ramp system that facilitates fast and efficient loading and unloading. In addition, its design optimizes the transportation of automobiles, and offers amenities for its crew, following Wallenius’ philosophy of creating a“home away from home” for its sailors.
