The consortium led by Mitsubishi Power Americas together with CONSAG Engenharia has signed an agreement with Portocem Geração de Energia and New Fortress Energy, to carry out a major reliability project in Brazil. The acquisition and construction (EPC) of the Portocem Thermoelectric Power Plant(UTE Portocem) in the South American country.
Brazil’s Great Reliability Project
One of the key points of the EPC contract is the participation of Mitsubishi Power, which will provide four upgraded, air-cooled M501JAC gas turbines that will operate in simple cycle at UTE Portocem. CONSAG will be in charge of critical aspects such as the balance of plant, utilities, civil works, assembly and commissioning of the plant, as well as the implementation of the transmission line and substation.
[post_relacionado]This collaboration will result in 1.6 GW of firm and dispatchable power capacity, consolidating UTE Portocem as the largest peaking power plant in Brazil and one of the largest in Latin America, providing much needed capacity to support the national power grid and reduce dependence on the national energy hydroelectric power .
The project and its 15-year Capacity Reservation Agreement obtained full regulatory approval in March 2024. Portocem Geração de Energia S.A. was the main winner in the first power capacity reservation auction in December 2021. This project is Mitsubishi Power’s third in Brazil in the last five years, totaling approximately 2.6 GW of high-tech gas turbine capacity.
The operability of the UTE Portocem project
Commercial operation is scheduled to begin in 2026, and construction of the plant is underway. NFE recently completed the construction and commissioning of the Barcarena LNG terminal, which will supply LNG to more than 2.2 GW of capacity in Pará, Brazil, owned by NFE.
