The world’s first four autonomous, electric ferries , equipped with innovative EcoPellers propulsion systems, are in development for Fjord1, a Norwegian ferry operator. Built at the Tersan shipyard in Turkey and designed by HAV Design in Norway, the ferries will offer an emission-free transport experience and will also mark a turning point in connectivity and sustainability in maritime transport .
How will autonomous ferries work?
Each ferry will be equipped with two SCHOTTEL SRE 340 L-Drive electric thrusters , specially designed to reduce both energy consumption and operating costs. These EcoPellers maximise hydrodynamic efficiency and eliminate the need for a top gear , thereby reducing mechanical loss and battery consumption. This contributes to an optimised range and a more sustainable operation on the Lavik-Oppedal route, where they will start operating in September 2026.
The removal of top gear on the EcoPellers also allows for quieter and more comfortable sailing for passengers, minimising vibrations and noise. With capacity for 399 people, including 120 cars , the ferries offer an environmentally friendly and comfortable alternative on the Sognefjord, north of Bergen on Norway’s west coast.
From 2027, these ferries will introduce automatic navigation, docking and autonomous crossing functions, with a remote controller on land to monitor the operation and manage any eventuality. In 2028, they will achieve full autonomy , being the pioneers in the implementation of these technologies on a regular commercial route.
