The deepwater drilling vessel Saipem 10000 has arrived off the coast of Egypt to begin a new phase of drilling in the Zohr gas field in the Eastern Mediterranean. This move is in line with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ strategy to intensify the country’s energy production.
The arrival of the Saipem 10000 marks the start of a series of planned drilling operations aimed at increasing gas production in Zohr. According to the announcement made by the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, the aim is to accelerate the incorporation of new volumes of gas into national production.

With the ability to drill up to 9,144 meters deep , the Saipem 10000 is one of the most advanced platforms of its kind. It is equipped with a class 3 dynamic positioning system, which allows it to operate accurately in highly complex environments. In addition, it has a dual drilling system, optimizing work times and increasing operational efficiency.
The alliance between Eni and Egypt
This effort is part of the strategic plan agreed between Egypt and Eni, which seeks to boost the country’s energy self-sufficiency and guarantee the domestic supply of natural gas. Zohr , discovered in 2015, is the largest gas field in the Mediterranean and has been key in Egypt’s transformation into a gas exporter.
