The U.S. Department of the Interior has approved the Atlantic Shores South offshore wind energy project, making it the ninth commercial-scale project in the country. This approval increases the total approved offshore wind power capacity to more than 13 gigawatts, enough capacity to supply electricity to nearly five million homes.
The Atlantic Shores South offshore wind project
This project will consist of two facilities: Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind Project 1 and 2. These facilities will generate up to 2,800 megawatts of electricity, which could supply approximately one million homes. In addition, located about 8.7 miles off the New Jersey coast, the project will have up to 200 wind turbine generators and up to 10 offshore substations.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has authorized the construction of up to 195 wind turbine generators.
BOEM has completed four offshore wind lease sales and has announced up to 12 additional sales planned through 2028. Approval of the Atlantic Shores South project is supported by a detailed Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which evaluated potential environmental impacts and took into account comments from public meetings and consultations.
Secretary Deb Haaland stated that“the U.S. Administration is building momentum every day toward our clean energy future, and today’s milestone is another step toward our goal of implementing the 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030.”
