The BATSO project has been presented with the objective of developing and validating innovative tools and methods for the replacement of major components in floating offshore wind turbines, improving the offshore wind industry.
BATSO project optimizes wind power maintenance
Funded with 2.9 million euros by the French Agency for the Environment and Energy Management(ADEME) under the ‘France 2030’ investment plan, the BATSO project focuses on a currently complex and costly operation: the replacement of major components on floating wind turbines, which requires heavy lifting equipment and the towing of turbines to port.
[post_relacionado]The main goal of this research project is to reduce the maintenance costs of floating wind turbines by carrying out these operations directly at sea. In addition, floating wind power will become more competitive, relative to the Levelized Cost of Energy(LCOE). To achieve this, the BATSO project proposes to use proven technology in onshore wind energy, including lifting by a crane mounted on the nacelle and the development of guidance systems along the tower.
Offshore operations will reduce the environmental impact of floating wind turbines. It is expected to measure and quantify both the savings in carbon footprint and the decrease in electricity costs compared to maintenance solutions that require towing to port.
In addition, the project will underline France’s technological leadership in the field of floating wind energy. floating wind energy by demonstrating the feasibility of major component replacement (MCR) operations at sea as soon as possible. This will strengthen the position of French players in the heavy maintenance market for floating wind turbines.
The research and development project, which will span three years, involves several industrial and academic players: BW Ideol, designer and builder of the floating Damping Pool technology and maintenance provider; Centrale Nantes, responsible for basin testing and design of cable robot system models. And finally, EDF Renewables, a project developer and operator of offshore wind farms; and OPEN-C Foundation, a leader in offshore testing and operator of the proposed test site.
