The city of Zaragoza has presented the inauguration of an innovative biorefinery, managed by the company Urbaser . This plant is part of the European project CIRCULAR BIOCARBON , funded by the European Union through its Horizon 2020 programme, with a budget of 23 million euros.

The biorefinery is designed to transform urban solid waste and sewage sludge into a wide range of high value-added bioproducts, such as biopolymers , biofertilizers , compostable bags and ” green graphene “. This approach is based on the circular economy and seeks to minimize the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, while promoting the creation of new materials, which benefit startups, companies and industries as well as consumers.
[post_relacionado]The Mayor of Zaragoza, Natalia Chueca, underlined the importance of this initiative, highlighting that ” Zaragoza is once again a benchmark in the green and circular economy “. The biorefinery, located at the Alfonso Maíllo Innovation Centre , will work in coordination with facilities in Italy, which will allow the system to be tested and adapted to different ecosystems and industrial practices, maximising its potential for replication throughout Europe.
Urbaser CEO Fernando Abril-Martorell stressed that ” the biorefinery is key to moving towards a circular bioeconomy, helping industries reduce their dependence on non-renewable resources .” He also noted that the project supports the energy transition by offering a sustainable alternative for waste management .
Among the products that this facility will generate are coatings for high-consumption products, such as biodegradable mulches and organomineral fertilizers , all designed to improve sustainability and reduce the environmental footprint of industries.
