Swiss manufacturer WinGD has made a significant breakthrough following initial testing of its X-DF-A engine , designed to run on ammonia. Tests at the Engine Research and Innovation Centre ( ERIC ) in Winterthur have confirmed that parameters such as combustion efficiency, emissions and fuel consumption meet expectations.
The development and advancement of the X-DF-A engine
This single-cylinder engine has been optimized for the validation of its combustion system under real operating conditions, allowing multi-cylinder tests to be carried out in Shanghai, China.

Development of the X-DF-A began in 2019, with investment in research into unique injection systems and combustion chambers that optimise the use of ammonia as a fuel. In addition, WinGD has worked closely with classification societies and shipyards to ensure the engine design meets the highest safety standards.
Furthermore, the test systems included experiments with methanol-fuelled engines, allowing engineers to analyse the mechanical and thermal behaviour of components under extreme conditions. This ensures that the technology is ready for the challenges of modern maritime operation.
With final validation scheduled for 2025, the company has orders for nearly 30 X-DF-A engines. Customers include Exmar LPG and CMB.Tech , which will deploy these engines on LPG carriers and bulk carriers .
