The shipping sector has achieved another step forward in decarbonization. Royal Wagenborg has successfully transferred the stern section of the first vessel designed exclusively for CO₂ transport on the high seas within Europe. The structure, a key component of the construction, has been transported to the Royal Niestern Sander shipyard, where it will continue its final assembly for INEOS.
A CO2 ship for Europe
This CO₂ vessel, based on the EasyMax design, is the result of a multi-year agreement signed in 2024 between INEOS and Royal Wagenborg, in the presence of the monarchs of the Netherlands and Denmark. Its objective is to enable the safe and efficient transport of CO₂ to the storage site in the Danish North Sea, an infrastructure managed by INEOS in collaboration with Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden.
[post_relacionado]The movement of the stern section was accomplished using self-propelled modular trailers (SPMT), requiring meticulous coordination and the use of specialized technology to ensure the structural integrity of the component. This segment houses the vessel’s main engine and essential systems, so its transfer marks a significant advancement in the vessel’s construction.
With the stern section now in place, the next phase includes the integration of other key components, such as the CO₂ loading and storage systems. The vessel is expected to be launched in mid-May and undergo the necessary testing before final delivery.
