The Swedish company Volvo Trucks is advancing its efficiency and sustainability strategy with the launch of a pioneering technology in the heavy truck sector: an automatic engine stop/start system integrated into the I-Roll technology.
Evolution in the start-stop motor
The new generation of I-Roll is activated on downhill slopes by continuous monitoring of the road. This engine temporarily shuts down without driver intervention, preventing fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions generation during such stretches. The system operates at speeds above 60 km/h and has the ability to optimize performance according to topography and environmental conditions.
[post_relacionado]According to Volvo, this innovation can minimize up to an additional 1% of fuel and emissions, adding to the benefits obtained with previous aerodynamic improvements such as the FH Aero cab. Such a feature does not replace other existing technologies such as I-See technology, while operating in tandem to achieve more efficient predictive performance.
The new feature will be available on FH and FH Aero models with 13-liter diesel engines. Orders will begin in September 2025, strengthening Volvo’s offering for operators looking to lower their operating costs and environmental impact.
This development is part of a comprehensive approach to decarbonization that also includes battery-electric trucks and fuel cell electric trucksand fuel cell electric trucks, as well as the use of renewable fuels in combustion engines.
