Toyota Motor Corporation has revealed its innovative third-generation fuel cell system (3rd Gen FC System), with the aim of strengthening its commitment to hydrogen-based mobility. The Japanese company seeks to consolidate this technology as an efficient and profitable alternative for commercial and passenger transport.
A key advance in efficiency and durability
The new FC system has been designed with a durability comparable to that of traditional diesel engines , but with greater efficiency in hydrogen consumption. According to Toyota, this new version improves the vehicles’ autonomy by 20% compared to the previous generation, while significantly reducing manufacturing costs.

- Improved durability, up to 2 times that of the previous generation, achieving durability comparable to diesel engines and a maintenance-free design.
- Improved fuel efficiency, 1.2 times higher than the previous generation, allowing for a 20% greater cruising range.

In addition, the company has worked on a more compact and adaptable design, which facilitates its integration into a wide range of heavy commercial vehicles and stationary generators.
Fuel cell system in key markets
Toyota is looking to expand the use of hydrogen beyond passenger cars. Its third-generation system is aimed at long-haul trucks, railways, ships and even stationary energy infrastructure. This initiative is part of the company’s broader strategy to drive a hydrogen economy and reduce carbon emissions.
The third-generation FC system will be available in markets such as Japan, Europe, North America and China from 2026. The official presentation will take place at the H2 & FC EXPO in Tokyo , an event that brings together the main players in the hydrogen industry .
Toyota has supplied more than 2,700 fuel cell systems to various companies and has sold more than 28,000 units of the Mirai, its hydrogen-powered sedan . With this new development, the company reaffirms its commitment to the development of clean technologies and the strengthening of the hydrogen infrastructure at a global level.
