The UK has taken a major step on its journey towards sustainable rail with the first intercity trial of a 700kW battery-powered train , exceeding initial expectations. Delivered by Hitachi Rail in partnership with Angel Trains and TransPennine Express, the trial showed that the technology can deliver cleaner and cheaper journeys, paving the way for greener public transport .
Battery-powered train performance during testing
During testing, the train achieved a fuel cost reduction of between 35% and 50%, far exceeding original projections of up to 30%. In addition, the battery enabled the train to reach speeds of over 120 km/h and operate in non-electrified stations without emissions, improving air quality and reducing noise pollution.

Jim Brewin, Managing Director UK and Ireland at Hitachi Rail, said the innovation provides “greener journeys” and opens up new opportunities for advanced manufacturing.
The trial also showed that the battery can operate the train in electric mode for up to 70km , enough to cover significant stretches of non-electrified routes. This could reduce the need for costly electrification projects, representing a potential saving of hundreds of millions of pounds.
Boost for industry and community
The project, as well as benefiting the environment , also supports the Government’s Industrial Strategy by promoting skilled jobs and strengthening the supply chain in the region. Rail Minister Lord Hendy highlighted the importance of this trial in the UK’s decarbonisation plans. Meanwhile, Kim McGuinness, Mayor of the North East, praised Hitachi’s investment and vision, saying that the region, the birthplace of modern rail, is now leading the way with clean and advanced technology.
Hitachi Rail has already demonstrated its expertise in this field with previous projects in Japan and Italy. The company plans to extend the use of these batteries to other trains and heavy vehicles , reinforcing its commitment to a greener and more efficient future in transport.
