The Faroe Islands Space Program, a strategic alliance between Sweden’s Minesto, SKF and the energy company SEV aims to harness tidal energy through an underwater kite to achieve a 100% renewable power generation 100% renewable electricity generation by 2030.
The underwater kite that generates electricity
At the heart of the program is Luna 12, a 1.2 MW underwater kite designed to capture energy from tidal currents. This technology is part of the Dragon Class line and is the first of its kind to be connected to an electrical grid.

SKF’s role in design
SKF, a global leader in bearing and seal systems, has been key from the start of development. Its technologies enable Luna 12 to operate with minimal friction and maximum durability at 60 meters depth, facing currents of up to 16 knots. In addition, integrated sensors monitor performance and wear, ensuring long-term operational efficiency.

Predictable and scalable lunar energy
Unlike wind or sun, tides can be predicted decades in advance. This makes lunar energy a stable source of electricity.
According to Minesto, there are at least 3,000 locations similar to the Faroe Islands. Faroe Islands that could benefit from the system. The company plans a future installation of 200 MW in the archipelago, capable of covering 40% of its energy demand.
A new energy model for the planet
The European Commission estimates that ocean energy could meet up to 10% of the continent’s energy demand by 2050. Minesto, founded as a spin-off from Saab in 2007, seeks to lead this transition with a patented technology capable of generating electricity even in slow currents where other solutions fail. With a presence in Europe and Asia, the company is listed on Nasdaq First North in Stockholm.
The estimated potential of Minesto’s technology reaches 650 GW. Its global adoption could replace all coal-fired generation capacity under development. The Faroese Space Program is not just a local solution: it is an exportable model that redefines how we use the Moon’s energy without leaving the planet.
