Statkraft has confirmed the development of a green hydrogen production plant on land adjacent to the former Scatsta airport in northern Scotland. This site, strategically located near the Sullom Voe oil terminal and existing gas plant, will be the core of the Shetland 2 Hydrogen Project.
The Shetland hydrogen project
This plan contemplates a facility with a capacity of up to 400 megawatts, dedicated to converting surplus renewable energy into hydrogen by means of electrolysis. This hydrogen will then be converted into green ammonia, suitable for multiple industrial uses, such as low-emission fertilizer and alternative fuel for shipping.
[post_relacionado]The initiative is supported by three Statkraft wind farms that are in the pre-construction phase: Mossy Hill, near Lerwick, and Energy Isles and Beaw Field, in Yell. These wind energy sources will power the plant, maximizing the use of locally generated clean electricity.
This project will contribute to the industrial decarbonization of the UK, and also plans to generate skilled employment in a region historically linked to energy. Stuart Marley, project manager, cited collaboration with the local community as an essential part of the development.
