Stadler Rail continues to advance the evolution of rail transport with the presentation of the“RS ZERO prototype“, the successor to the iconic Regio-Shuttle RS1, in Berlin. This new train was equipped with hydrogen propulsion technologies and state-of-the-art battery energy storage to ensure CO₂ emission-free rail operations on secondary lines.
Stadler’s RS ZERO prototype
The Regio-Shuttle RS1 is one of the most popular and historic vehicles for rail transport in Germany, with more than 28 years of history, with around 500 units operating in the Czech Republic and the country. Building on this heritage, the RS ZERO integrates the proven technology of the RS1 with high-tech propulsion systems.

This new train reflects both continuity and innovation, maintaining the distinctive features of the RS1, such as the trapezoidal window moldings, while adopting a futuristic design with a modern LED spoiler. This new train is designed to operate on non-electrified routes, offering flexible solutions for local emission-free operation, adapting to different conditions on the rail network, through hydrogen refueling stations or electric charging islands.
The new RS ZERO design
The new RS ZERO is available in single and double versions, accommodating between 70 and 150 passengers. In addition, this prototype is characterized by a low access height, allowing a large low-floor area without steps, and barrier-free use, which is especially advantageous for passengers with reduced mobility.

This innovative train is set to carry passengers to their destinations safely, comfortably and environmentally friendly, setting a new standard for local rail transportation.
The RS ZERO prototype will be officially presented at the“InnoTrans 2024” trade fair, which will take place from September 24 to 27 in Berlin, on track T09/40. The presentation of the vehicle is scheduled for September 24, 2024 at 14:00.
