Rolls-Royce has unveiled its latest developments in submarine power and automation. The company will be showcasing its underwater charging unit and mtu NautIQ automation system at Euronaval , which improve the performance and safety of underwater operations.
Roll-Royce develops new line of MTU submarine engines
Today’s modern submarines require ever more electrical power to operate their advanced storage systems and batteries. Rolls-Royce has responded with a 20-cylinder version of the mtu Series 4000 engine , capable of charging batteries at a faster rate and reducing the submarines’ surface time.

For example, they manage to maintain discretion in the complex aquatic environment, while having adapted their combustion and air systems.
The mtu NautIQ automation system enables complete control and monitoring of all submarine systems via an integrated interface. This system controls propulsion, energy and allows easy expansion with additional modules for damage control, communication and navigation systems.
According to Rolls-Royce , mtu NautIQ technology has been proven on surface vessels and is now being adapted and applied in the subsea sector, consolidating the company as a comprehensive provider of underwater defence solutions.
The director of Rolls-Royce Power Systems stressed the importance of these solutions at a time when navies are looking for more efficient and advanced technology: “ The mtu NautIQ and our mtu Series 4000 generators represent a step forward in the evolution of safe, discreet submarines with greater energy capabilities .”
