The Holt Lock , located at mile marker 347 on the Black Warrior River, has reopened after being temporarily closed due to geologic movement that compromised its stability. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) implemented temporary measures to ensure safe operation, allowing river traffic to resume unrestricted under standard locking priorities.

Holt Lock operational after monitoring
During the reopening, the lock operated on a schedule of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. , with mariners following the operator’s instructions on vessel and tug placement. USACE engineers maintained constant monitoring of structural conditions to assess possible adjustments to operations.
That same day, an information call was held for waterway users at 2:30 PM CDT, where the current status of the lock and the measures taken were discussed. Participation was important to inform about the operating conditions and safety measures taken.
Continuous monitoring by USACE engineers was essential to ensure that the stability of the Holt Lock remained within safe parameters. In the event of any change in the situation, it was announced that a new navigation advisory would be issued with updated guidelines for the operation.
