After four years of inactivity, the Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Iowa could restart operations to meet growing demand for electricity. NextEra Energy, the plant’s owner, has begun engineering studies and discussions with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to assess the feasibility of the project.
On the reactivation of the Duane Arnold nuclear plant
The electrification of buildings and the development of artificial intelligence data centers have led to a significant increase in energy demand in the United States. NextEra Energy, one of the leading renewable energy companies, believes that the reactivation of Duane Arnold, the only nuclear plant in Iowa until its closure in 2020 , could be a viable solution for the supply of carbon -free energy.
Although NextEra is focused on renewable energy like wind and solar , nuclear power remains key to its carbon reduction strategy.
With additional projects in clean energy and storage, the company has secured agreements to develop more than 10 gigawatts in the renewable sector .
However, the Duane Arnold boiling water reactor offers a unique opportunity to generate nuclear electricity with optimized cost and reduced operational risk.
