Lake Burragorang, Sydney’s largest water reservoir, could play a crucial role in New South Wales’ transition to renewable energy, thanks to a pumped hydro project proposed by ZEN Energy.
This innovative project would convert a former coal mining site at Nattai, located high above the lake, into a clean energy power plant. clean energy capable of providing on-demand electricity to 500,000 homes and businesses.
Pumped Hydro: the Australian hydroelectric project

This initiative will not only support grid stability during peak demand but will also facilitate the transition to renewable energy sources.
The plan is for the facility, located 24 km from the Warragamba dam, to be primarily subway, using water from Lake Burragorang to generate power through subway turbines during periods of high demand.
ZEN Energy has established a community benefit fund of $1 million per year and anticipates that construction of the project will create 1,500 jobs, with 80 more in ongoing operations once completed. The site’s history as a coal mining site and later as a coal washery until 2001, will be completely transformed with this new use focused on clean energy.
The reconversion of a site degraded by coal mining into a source of renewable energy renewable energy is a powerful example of how old infrastructure can be adapted to meet modern demands for sustainability.
