Polar Night Energy continues to advance in the evolution of sand batteries with the development of a technology capable of converting stored heat into electricity. This research project, with a budget of 4.2 million euros, will improve the efficiency of renewable energies by transforming heat into electricity.
Building a Polar Night Energy battery
The Finnish company was founded in 2018 and specialises in the design and manufacture of high-temperature thermal accumulators. Its main product is the sand battery that stores wind and solar energy, helping to reduce fuel use. The inclusion of heat-to-electricity conversion ( Power to Heat to Power, P2H2P ) opens up new possibilities for energy storage and balancing energy networks.
[post_relacionado]According to the company’s technical director, Markku Ylönen, this technology will improve the reliability of renewable energy, while promoting the reduction of CO₂ emissions on a large scale. To validate and refine the process, Polar Night Energy is developing a pilot plant to be built in 2025 near Tampere, Finland. This pilot will focus on optimizing thermal storage and the efficient conversion of heat into energy.
The project has been supported by Business Finland , which will provide €2.1 million in grants to design, test and validate the technology. Polar Night Energy has also announced a collaboration with Ilmatar , a power producer in the Nordic countries, with a view to conducting commercial trials in wind farms.
