Petrobras has been carrying out a research project in Brazil, focused on natural hydrogen, with plans to expand throughout the country. This initiative involves an investment of 20 million reais destined to study the generation and feasibility of the extraction of this type of hydrogen , also known as geological hydrogen due to its underground origin. It stands out for being a renewable energy resource that does not emit greenhouse gases when used.
Innovation in natural hydrogen with workshops and collaborations
Since 2022, the company has been preparing its technical team in this area, collaborating closely with the scientific community. An example of this was the first Natural Hydrogen Workshop carried out in March of this year at the Research Center (Cenpes), which had the participation of national and international experts. These initiatives seek to evaluate tools for the prospecting of natural hydrogen and are developed in collaboration with various institutions and companies globally.
[post_relacionado]Carlos José do Nascimento Travassos, director of Engineering, Technology and Innovation at the oil company, highlights the importance of hydrogen as a viable solution for decarbonization . “Petrobras is intensely exploring the hydrogen value chain through research and development projects, as well as strategic partnerships, which positions us as leaders in evaluating the potential of this source in the country,” he stated.
Petrobras promotes investment in clean energy
The commitment of Petrobras with research in low-carbon energy is clear, with a forecast that investments in R&D in this area will amount to 700 million dollars until 2028, representing an increase of 15% to 30% of total investment in R&D D for the end of the period.
The exploration of energy alternatives not only benefits the environment, but also can redefine the global energy economy. Additional studies could explore how existing natural gas infrastructure could be adapted for hydrogen transportation and storage, thereby maximizing current investments and facilitating a smoother energy transition.
