Petrobras has broken the record for carbon dioxide ( CO₂ ) reinjection into the Santos Basin’s pre-salt fields. In 2024, the Brazilian company will inject 14.2 million tons of CO₂, setting a record compared to the 13 million injected in 2023. This advance establishes the oil company as a pioneer in carbon capture and storage ( CCUS ) technologies in ultra-deep waters.
The carbon dioxide reinjection program
This CO₂ reinjection program is the largest of its kind in operation worldwide, considering the amount of carbon dioxide reinjected annually. According to the Global CCS Institute , global CCS project capacity is expected to reach 51 million tons by 2024, with Petrobras contributing more than a quarter ( 28% ) of this capacity.
[post_relacionado]Since 2008, the company has accumulated a total of 67.9 million tons of reinjected carbon dioxide, setting a precedent and establishing a significant industry benchmark.
Petrobras’ success in this area lies in its strategy that integrates carbon capture ( CCUS ) with enhanced oil recovery ( EOR ). This combination has allowed the company to reduce CO₂ emissions per barrel of oil produced, with a lower yield than the global average.
With the launch of new production units, the company expects to achieve 80 million tons of reinjected CO2 by the end of 2025. This commitment to sustainability optimizes oil production and also helps meet global emissions reduction targets.
