On April 4, 2025, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) signed a key contract for the construction and chartering of its first VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) type oil tanker capable of operating on methanol as an alternative fuel .
Construction of a VLCC with dual-fuel technology
This VLCC, to be built by Nippon Shipyard, is a pioneer in incorporating a propulsion engine that allows the use of methanol, a cleaner fuel compared to traditional heavy oil.
[post_relacionado]This vessel, which will be chartered on a long-term basis by Idemitsu Tanker Co., Ltd., will become the first member of NYK’s fleet to feature this dual-propulsion technology , capable of switching between methanol and fuel oil to maximize efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
With a length of 339.5 meters and a deadweight of nearly 310,000 tons, the vessel is designed to operate primarily in the Strait of Malacca , one of the world’s most important crude oil transportation routes.
The potential of methanol in reducing emissions
Methanol is considered a next-generation fuel that could reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 15% compared to heavy fuel oil. Furthermore, the use of greener versions of methanol, such as biomethanol and synthetic methanol produced from renewable energy and captured CO₂, is anticipated to significantly increase this emission reduction, promoting a faster transition to cleaner energy sources in shipping.
In 2023, the company revealed its “ Decarbonization Story ,” highlighting its commitment to sustainability and technological innovation to meet its net-zero emissions goals by 2050 .
This project is the result of a collaboration between NYK, Idemitsu Tanker, IINO Kaiun Kaisha, and Nippon Shipyard , who have been working together since 2024 to design and develop this eco-friendly vessel . The vessel is expected to be delivered in 2028, a date that symbolizes the company’s progress.
