NASA is making progress in lunar exploration with the development of the ISRU Pilot Excavator (IPEx), an innovative mining robot designed to extract and transport lunar regolith . This material is key for future missions, as it allows obtaining resources such as oxygen and hydrogen for astronaut survival and fuel manufacturing.
A mining robot with dual function
IPEx serves a dual purpose: it acts as both an excavator and a dump truck, facilitating the transport of large quantities of regolith . Its ability to extract up to 10,000 kg of lunar soil in a single day marks a significant advance over previous missions, which could only collect a few kilograms.
[post_relacionado]One of the most innovative aspects of IPEx is the use of bucket drums, hollow cylinders with blades that rotate in opposite directions. This reduces drag and makes digging easier in the low lunar gravity .
The robot is equipped with several advanced subsystems:
- Mobility system : composed of wheels and control devices, it allows movement on uneven terrain.
- Dust Mitigation System – Utilizes cameras and dust shields to ensure visibility in extreme environments.
- Thermal control system : designed to maintain optimal temperatures on the Moon.
- Regolith collection system : uses rotating drums with scoops that excavate and store lunar material.
Moving towards space independence
The IPEx development is based on its predecessor, the RASSOR robot , but introduces improvements in modularity and adaptability. Its design allows it to be adapted to different missions, reducing costs and simplifying maintenance.
In 2022, NASA conducted tests at the Kennedy Space Center to evaluate the performance of IPEx in lunar-like conditions. The results were promising, bringing the possibility of establishing a self-sustaining lunar base closer.
