The Japanese company MODEC has signed a strategic contract with Sumitomo Heavy Industries to build the front block of the new hull of its floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit for the Gato do Mato project. Gato do Mato project project in Brazil.

Soichi Ide, digital director and head of MODEC’s project execution group, highlighted the importance of this approach during the signing ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur office, marking the first official event at the facility.

Located in the Santos Basin off the Brazilian coast, Gato do Mato is a pre-salt gas and condensate discovery. Operated by Shell together with partners such as Ecopetrol and TotalEnergies, the project seeks to start production in 2029, with the FPSO designed to operate at depths of up to 2,000 meters and produce up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day.
The signing of this contract reaffirms the commitment of MODEC to innovation in new generation hull design, and for Sumitomo, it opens a new chapter in its participation in the global offshore market. This strategic move strengthens the position of both players in the competitive offshore energy arena.
