The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has awarded Maine the first floating offshore wind research lease in the United States. The lease covers an area of nearly 15,000 acres located 28 nautical miles offshore on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). and will allow for the installation of up to 12 wind turbines capable of generating 144 megawatts of clean energy.

This research project represents a crucial breakthrough in assessing the feasibility of floating offshore wind energy in deep water.
