The Port of Rotterdam hosted the christening of the Adrian Maersk , a dual-fuel container ship fueled by natural gas. The event took place at APM Terminals Maasvlakte II , Maersk’s flagship terminal in Europe, and was attended by Stephanie Pullings Hart, Executive Vice President and COO of Nestlé , who was named godmother of the new vessel.

The Adrian Mærsk has a capacity of over 16,000 TEU and will operate on the Asia-Mediterranean trade route. It is also equipped to use methanol as fuel , which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by between 65% and 90%, depending on the composition of the biofuel used. Furthermore, the addition of this type of vessel is aligned with Maersk’s core goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.
[post_relacionado]Nestlé , a strategic customer of Maersk , transports all of its ocean freight under the ECO Delivery Ocean program , which uses alternative fuels to reduce the global carbon footprint. This collaboration allows for a reduction of emissions associated with freight transport and future supply routes by more than 80%.
Maersk points out that the technology is available, and the challenge now lies in establishing transparent regulations at the international level. The upcoming meeting of the International Maritime Organization ( IMO ) will be crucial in defining the regulatory framework that will accelerate the use of clean fuels on a global scale.
The Adrian Maersk will be part of Maersk’s new East-West network , designed to offer schedule reliability exceeding 90%. In this strategy, hub terminals such as Maasvlakte II are part of a strategy to maintain operational efficiency while moving toward lower-emission logistics.
