The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, presented the excavation model that will transform the extension of Metro Line 11. This project includes two new stations in Comillas and Madrid Río, connecting strategic areas of the city.
Technology in the excavation of the Madrid metro
The key element of this expansion is the Mayrit tunnel boring machine, manufactured in Germany and designed to reach a drilling speed of 15 metres per day . Compared with the two metres of the traditional method, this advance promises to speed up the work that has already begun. The tunnel boring machine , whose name pays homage to Madrid’s Arab origins, will begin operations in 2026.

The first phase of the project includes 6.6 kilometres of track that will link Plaza Elíptica and Conde de Casal. In the future, the total 33 kilometres will link Cuatro Vientos with Valdebebas, connecting key points such as Atocha and Terminal 4 of Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport .
A greener and more efficient metro
The Community of Madrid seeks to promote sustainable transport and reduce emissions by 90% by 2050. This section will use 210,000 m³ of concrete and 32,000 tons of steel , demonstrating its commitment to modernizing the transport network.
Díaz Ayuso also highlighted that the Madrid Metro will exceed 700 million passengers this year , the highest figure in its 105-year history. In addition, she announced projects such as the extension of Line 5 to the airport and the expansion of Line 9, consolidating the Madrid Metro as a benchmark in urban mobility.
