The ALBA Synchrotron and the Barcelona Institute of Materials Science ( CSIC-ALBA ) have inaugurated a joint laboratory aimed at optimising the development of batteries, superconductors and catalysts essential for renewable energies. This centre is located in Barcelona and will focus on applied research through advanced tools.

The new infrastructure will allow batteries to be analysed under real conditions and situations during charge and discharge cycles, an important aspect to improve their performance in applications such as the electrification of transport. In addition, it will facilitate the production of superconductors using the TLAG methodology , optimising their cost-performance ratio and expanding their industrial use.

On the other hand, companies such as Sumitomo have been involved in the development of superconductors, promoting innovative solutions in energy distribution networks.
With more than 150 users since its opening, this laboratory promotes scientific research and connects the academic and industrial worlds. In the words of Caterina Biscari, director of the ALBA Synchrotron, the collaboration with the CSIC represents a firm step towards the creation of sustainable applications to face global energy challenges.
