BayWa r.e., a global leader in renewable energy solutions, is preparing to begin construction of the Rueda Sur Cluster in Spain, a pioneering project that merges different technologies and the largest onshore wind farm built in the region.
Electrical capacity of the large wind farm facility
This complex will consist of two 53 MW solar photovoltaic farms and three 135 MW wind farms, establishing one of the largest onshore wind power facilities that BayWa r.e. has participated in and developed in Europe. The project has been carried out in collaboration with CEAR, a local partner, which will continue to contribute to its development.
[post_relacionado]Located in Épila, Lumpiaque and Rueda de Jalón, near Zaragoza, at a distance of 40 kilometers, this project is emerging as a benchmark for future renewable energy initiatives. Each of the wind farms will include eight Nordex turbines, providing a capacity of 45 MW per farm, for a total of 135 MW. On the other hand, the solar photovoltaic installations will offer an output of 30 MW and 23 MW, reaching a total of 53 MW.
In its entirety, these facilities will generate about 475 GWh of green energy annually, enough to power more than 121,000 homes in Spain.a. With an investment of more than 280 million euros, the energy produced will be sold under a 10-year power purchase agreement.
Environmental protection of BayWa r.e projects
BayWa r.e. opts for a strategy of simultaneous construction of the projects in the same location to optimize space and land use. Connection of all five plants is anticipated by the end of 2025, marking a significant milestone for BayWa r.e. as its first project of this caliber in Spain.
A distinctive feature of this project is the use of a single grid connection point for all five plants, which expands installed capacity, contributes significantly to the country’s energy transition and minimizes infrastructure costs.
Jorge Gómez, project manager of BayWa r.e., highlights the innovative character and importance of this project for Spain, emphasizing the intention to involve the local community to maximize the positive impact, promoting biodiversity, sustainability and job creation.
The Environmental Impact Statement of the project has been positive, ensuring its compatibility with environmental requirements. Several measures will be implemented to beautify the landscape and enrich biodiversity, including the IdentiFlight system, which uses artificial intelligence to detect and protect birds. Collaboration with municipalities and local entities is a key component for the community to benefit from the project.
