The International Council on Mining and Metals ( ICMM ) and the International Network for Acid Prevention ( INAP ) have launched an innovative tool designed to strengthen water pollution prevention in mining.

The tool presented by ICMM and INAP provides a comprehensive framework that allows mining companies to manage water in mining from exploration to the closure of operations. In this way, water contamination is mitigated, and long-term remediation costs are optimized.

This new resource is designed to complement the renowned Global Acid Rock Drainage Guide ( GARD Guide ), making it easier for non-specialist audiences to access and understand. It also includes an Excel-based function that allows users to filter key information by mine lifecycle stage, improving decision-making at both corporate and operational levels.

According to Dr. Emma Gagen, Director of Environment at ICMM, says water is an invaluable resource that must be protected through responsible and sustainable management. In a context of increasing demand for minerals and metals, the mining industry must adopt preventive measures from the initial design of projects.
For his part, Dr. Paul Brown, Chairman of the Board of Directors of INAP, stressed that this tool reinforces the strategy of linking corporate and operational management, which is important for long-term sustainable mining.
ICMM has demonstrated its commitment to water stewardship for years, publishing guidelines such as the Position Statement on Water Stewardship (2017) and the Water Management Maturity Framework (2023) . This new resource is a further step in consolidating responsible practices within the sector.
